Vandetta is a Victory

Vandetta

After my last film going experience with Ultraviolet, I wanted to make sure that the next theater I entered would keep me entertained for 2 hours and not have me contemplating walking out. Initially I was worried that this film would turn out more like Revolutions or Reloaded did in the Matrix universe than the original. I was so happy to find that was a silly concern.

Vandetta is an action sci-fi drama that builds more upon character than action. Hugo Weaving plays the lead mask wearing man going only by the moniker, “V”. His vision is to return England back to the people and begin a revolution against the Nazi-like totalitarian state. Hugo was perfect for this role, as even playing Agent Smith, he spoke with a sort of sophistication which plays ideally into this role. Natalie Portman, as usual is beautiful - even if she does sport a rather masculine hairdo. Her performance is equally satisfying while he english accent does falter a bit here and there, it is quite minor.

“Remember remember,
the fifth of November…
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot…”

My only concern with the film is at the end when “V” makes good on his promise for revolution by use of explosives. I didn’t feel a victory as a certain building was blown up. I think victory was granted just prior to this by the people of the country.

Overall, an excellent movie with some great action and well-flushed out story and a somewhat surprisingly a bunch of three-dimensional characters which will keep you entertained from start till finish.

Ultra…bad

Ultraviolet

I saw the trailer for Ultraviolet a few months back and it looked like it might suceed where movies like Aeon Flux failed at delivering an entertaining future-based, sci-fi-action movie. Well, it was future-based and it was indeed sci-fi but I can’t really call it that much of an action movie or at all entertaining. The biggest failure, in my opinion is the attempt to bring a movie where hundreds of people are slaughtered by the heroin in as a PG-13 movie.

Actually, I lied - that isn’t the biggest failure. This movie lacks a few elements to make it a success. 1. A semi-original story (or a story that makes any sense). 2. Tension. At no point in this movie did I think Milla Jovovich’s character was in danger. She so effortlessly takes out a room full of humans as well as a room full of people ‘infected’ like her. I counted at least 4 different scenes where Violet is surrounded by foes, then there is some fancy cuts and effects and then all her enemies drop dead (all without bleeding). It is PG-13 remember.

Why do her clothes and hair change color? If the virus (vampirism) was only recently discovered…why do they all have swords with ancient hieroglyphs on them? The only thing I liked about this movie was when it ended. That is a lie too. Milla looked amazing.
