What is this for?

It’s really not funny anymore!

The RIAA first became a frontrunner in the news back when the Napster Peer-2-Peer site was sued. That wasn’t completely unreasonable on their part as they tried to tame music piracy even though none of the files were actually stored on Napster’s servers. Then the RIAA took a step into silliness when they began suing file sharers who based on their IP address. It was really amusing, and obvious of the issues in their policy, when it surfaced that some lawsuits were filed against small children and even people who didn’t own a computer. Things are becoming less amusing now.

Its seems the RIAA has filed a lawsuit against XM Radio based on the ability of a product by Pioneer called the Inno. The Inno is a portable XM player / mp3 player. The Inno has a buffer that will allow you to go back 30 minutes and re-listen to something you missed and even record an XM stream to listen to later on. That is what the RIAA has a problem with apparently.

The lawsuit, which was filed on Tuesday, accused XM of “massive wholesale infringement”. The problem with this device (according to the music industry) is that you can save the XM streams to the device to playback later. You know…just like you could do with the tape recorder and FM or a VCR and television since the 1970’s! Apparently the fact that music is now in a digital form makes old methods deemed legal, now illegal. Oh yeah, and if you save a song recorded from XM to your Inno, you can’t move it off the device.

The RIAA is seeking $150,000 for every song recorded to the device by XM users, which they are estimating a total of $37.5 billion.

Their antics really are not amusing any longer.

The delivery guy called this morning at 7:30am to say they would be here to deliver my sofa and chair and sure enough, around 10am they showed up! No more hand-me-down ‘dorm’ furniture!

It’s taken me some time to get all my photos from my site on textamerica, but I have them now and many have been uploaded to the gallery. I still have a bunch more photos to go through and upload, which will happen over the next few weeks. Check out what is there now and let me know what you think.
